10 Random Rodeo Queen Tips

Sometimes it's just the smallest details that will make a difference.

1.  Lose the Gum - Chewing gum is not acceptable when you're in crown and banner.  If the crown is on your head, the gum is not in your mouth.  Opt for breath mints if you need to freshen your breath.  No one wants to watch a queen or contestant chewing away on her gum like a cow chewing her cud.

2.  Use a Broke Horse - The horse you use as a titleholder should be experienced.  The rodeo arena is no place to work a young horse that has not been out and about.  Save the training for home or for jackpots and smaller rodeos.

3.  Relax and Have Fun - While the pageant experience can be stressful, remember to have fun.  Putting undue stress on yourself to do well, concentrating on only what has gone wrong or allowing others to intimidate you can lead to forced smiles and poor performance.  Have fun!

4.  Keep your Room Clean - Whether you are staying at a hotel or at a host home, keep your room tidy and orderly.  Hang up your clothes, pick up your trash and keep your make-up organized on the counter.  You make an impression on EVERYONE you come in contact with, and those impressions can travel.

5.  Mind your Manners - A thank-you goes a long way, especially when dealing with sponsors.

6.  Keep in Contact - Your coordinator needs to know what you're up to at all times.  No one appreciates getting a phone call about their titleholder being at an event they did not know she was attending.

7.  Ask Questions - The only dumb question is the one not asked.  Speaking up will save you, and perhaps others, a lot of headaches.  And don't apologize for asking questions, that's what coordinators are there for.

8.  Get Help from Others - Don't be afraid to call up someone and ask for help.  None of us know it all about horsemanship, make-up, hair, clothing or any other aspect of queening and we can all benefit from the advice of qualified persons

9.  Don't Change Tack for the Pageant  - Rodeo queen judges don't care how much silver is on your saddle, what they care about is that your tack is clean, fits you and your horse, and that it's in good repair.   Ride the saddle you're used to, use the headstall and bit your horse is used to, and you'll be much more confident in the arena.

10.  Wear Good Foundation Garments - A well fitted bra and other undergarments can enhance your figure and make your clothes look better.  Try on several to find the one right for you, and remember to wear the undergarments you are going to be wearing in the pageant for all of your clothing fittings.

Here's to achieving your rodeo queen dreams!
